Anthony Gordon opens meeting with Tuchel after Chelsea clash – ‘I desperately wanted to work with him’

One thing that has become clear over the years is the fact that Anthony Gordon did not enjoy playing for Everton as much as initially thought.

Gordon’s move to Newcastle United caused a stir at Goodison Park and has since been booed when he returned to the club where he spent his early years.

This summer it was also reported that he was close to a move to his boyhood club’s arch-rivals Liverpool, although nothing materialized on that front.

In 2022, Gordon was close to a move from Everton to Chelsea incoming England boss Thomas Tuchel in favor of a move for the winger.

The news divided opinion at the time, but Tuchel was perhaps ahead given Gordon’s form since moving to St James’ Park.

Last month the 23-year-old signed a new long-term deal with the club, where he scored 15 goals, joining in January 2023 for £45m. He has quickly become a fan favorite on Tyneside.

On the possible move, Gordon said: “It was pretty close to be honest. At the time I really wanted to go and especially work with him (Tuchel).

“I felt like my style would suit his playing style – the way he played at Chelsea was very exciting for me. It was a great opportunity for me that ultimately did not materialize and I look forward to working with him a few years later.”

Judging by Tuchel’s love for Gordon, we can certainly expect to see a lot of him for England.

“I spoke to him after a game we played against Chelsea when I was playing for Everton. I shook his hand and… he said some very complimentary things to me that I’ll keep to myself. I felt a lot of warmth from him, which made me really want to play for him, but I didn’t get that chance.”

Had Gordon made the move to Stamford Bridge in 2022, he could have been one of Tuchel’s last signings as Blues boss as the German was sacked early in that season.

Disagreements with the hierarchy at some of Tuchel’s previous clubs have almost become the norm for the Champions League winner.

His contract with England runs for just 18 months, which gives the 2026 World Cup glory or bust feeling, but if you had to back one manager in tournament football to go a long way with the current crop of talent in the English selection, then it is Tuchel. .
