A Samurai-inspired backpack elevates leather scraps into a bag fit for a warrior – colossal

In Japan, randoseru are small, high-quality backpacks, usually made of leather, designed to withstand years of use by schoolchildren. Manufacturer Murase Kabanko, for example, left his traditional offering with a very detailed nod to a completely different tradition: samurai.

Also known as busiSamurai were an elite military class in Japan between the 11th and 19th centuries, usually held by feudal lords. Over the centuries their status evolved from a primarily provincial role to one of notable political influence, but the warriors were formally abolished in the 1870s as modern armies emerged.

In Murase Kabanko’s unique, carefully crafted bag, the company has paid tribute to historic armor. Leather craftsman Noriki Okada used scraps from other bags to put together an accessory that exudes strength and a connection to Japan’s cultural heritage. In yellow, black and red the intimidating faces of oni demons flank the sides and are embellished with woven details and precise stitching.

Made of small leather plates and numerous copper rivets, the backpack is reminiscent of the protective shell of a isopod and refers to a style of armor that developed between the 14th and 16th centuries known as tosei-gusoku. The suits were often heavier than 50 pounds and were designed for maximum flexibility while providing optimal protection.

Tosei-gusoku also refers to types of equipment that accompany Buddhist altars or horses. Okadas randoseru exploits the dual associations of history and utility.

Okadas randoseru won the artistic design prize at this year’s Japan Leather Awards. If you have 500,000 yen (about $3,300) to spare, you can buy it yourself at Murase Kabanko’s website. (via Spoon & Tamago)
