Dogs left on the side of the road with a heartbreaking message

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (WPTV) – Two dogs are looking for a new home after they were dumped along a dirt road in Florida with a heartbreaking note pleading for help.

The dogs, Mella and Rocky, are happy and friendly, which is how their owner described them as they wrote on their harnesses in black marker and left them along a road in Jupiter Farms. Inside the harnesses were the dogs’ medical records and a note asking if anyone could help them.

The note read: “I’m so sorry, but I ran out of time and options.”

Sarah Johnson took in the dogs overnight and handed them over to manager Janelle Marrone of the Furry Friends animal shelter on Tuesday.

“It’s incredibly disturbing to know that people are ready, willing and able to just dump their dogs,” Johnson said.

The rescue operation at the Jupiter location is over capacity, but Marrone makes way for Mella and Rocky.

“Pretty crazy that they were dumped like that,” she said.

Abandoning an animal is a crime in Florida, but Marrone said it is still common. She says shelter overcrowding is leaving people without a place to take their pets. Even the shelter in Palm Beach County has to wait two months for surrender.

“People just panic and don’t know what to do and dump their dogs. It’s really terrible,” Marrone said.

Furry Friends plans to contact the owners of Mella and Rocky, who are listed in the dogs’ medical records. Marrone wants to know why this happened.

In the meantime, the rescue is preparing the dogs for adoption.

“I really hope that these dogs are adopted very quickly and together. They are so sweet. In the short time they were with us, they were a real treasure,” Johnson said.
