Koala in the couple's bedroom leaves them dazed

ADELAIDE, Australia (CNN) – A couple from Australia came home and were shocked to find a koala in their bedroom.

Fran Dias Rufino, who moved to Australia from Brazil, posted the unexpected encounter on Instagram and said she was at a loss for words on Wednesday when she saw the koala at the home she shares with her husband Brunno.

“Only in Australia,” she wrote in the post. “I was so nervous that I forgot my English.”

Video shows the koala sitting on the floor next to the couple’s bed and staring at them before climbing onto a bedside table. Then he jumps on the bed.

The koala left the bedroom after Rufino’s husband used a sweater to guide it outside. Another video shows the marsupial running through the house, presumably looking for a way out, while Rufino screams frantically in the background.

“I was nervous and worried about how we were going to get him out,” Rufino said.

She says her husband later used a blanket to scare the koala away, and it then found its way to the door.

Koalas live mainly along the east coast of Australia and are endangered in many areas, but in South Australia, where the couple live, their numbers are stable. The marsupials rarely attack humans and are most often seen in the tops of trees, munching on eucalyptus leaves.

Rufino says she occasionally sees koalas walking on the street or perched in trees in her area and thinks it may have snuck in through the pet’s hatch.
