DAVIE, FL. (WSVN) – The search is on for a thief who allegedly stole a 2014 Sprinter Mercedes van that was located near the owner’s home.

The work truck is owned by Lorenzo Diaz, a general contractor, whose livelihood has been threatened by one theft. Now he’s looking for answers.

“It bothers me,” Lorenzo said. “I don’t want to say it, but it bothers me.”

The incident happened around 1 a.m. Thursday at his home in Davie. A silhouetted figure entered his property at Orange Dr. near the Florida Turnpike and in his fenced backyard.

He said the threat was incredibly close to both his home and his family.

“I mean, not alone, I have four kids,” he said. “I mean, you can see it, you know, not big enough to defend itself.”

Diaz believes the thief jumped the fence and opened the gate using a remote control he also kept in his van. Most of his work equipment was also stolen.

“I left my key in the car, and I think he found it easy, so he started the car, opened the gate and left,” Diaz said. “Just like my chipping hammer, welding machine, grinder, my compressor, my saw, my van was fully loaded.”

An outside storage shed containing other tools remained untouched, but the loss still severely hampers Diaz’s ability to work.

The crime has created an atmosphere of unease in the household and in the community, an atmosphere that Diaz says is concerning.

“I don’t feel comfortable,” he said. “Honestly, Davie is changing for some reason. When I moved here, like when I built this house 22 years ago, it was completely different than it is today. So we’re a little worried now.”

If you or anyone who knows has any information about this crime, please contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS, or Diaz himself at 786-380-9728. He offers $2,000 for information about his stolen vehicle.
