Inmate dies in Bexar County Jail as medical examiner investigates

SAN ANTONIO – A 46-year-old inmate, Marcus Joseph Fontenette, has died at the Bexar County Jail.

According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, Fontenette was found unresponsive in his cell on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 during a routine check. Prison staff immediately took life-saving measures, but he was later pronounced dead by first responders.

The exact cause of death is currently under investigation by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office. However, preliminary findings indicate a possible medical episode.

In accordance with the Sandra Bland Act, the Bexar County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office is conducting a criminal investigation into the incident. In addition, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative investigation. Prison officials also notified the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
