URBANA – A former student suspected by an administrator of having a gun during an after-hours visit to Urbana High School Thursday was later taken into custody for resisting arrest, police said.

Malique Hyde, 24, was taken to the Champaign County Satellite Jail where he is charged with aggravated resisting arrest and unlawful use of a weapon.

According to authorities, Hyde showed up at his alma mater on Thursday shortly after his discharge and asked to visit the main office to order transcripts.

Although they were initially given permission to proceed, administrators reported later seeing him in other parts of the building, where he “gave several explanations for his presence,” police said.

While being escorted to the exit by administrators, someone reported seeing what appeared to be a gun in Hyde’s pocket. After leaving the building, the manager contacted Urbana police.

About 20 minutes later, Urbana police found Hyde riding a bicycle near the intersection of Kinch Street and Rainbowview Drive. When confronted by officers, Hyde allegedly “physically resisted attempts to take him into custody,” UPD said.

During the interaction, an officer suffered a wrist injury that required medical treatment.

No weapon was recovered or confirmed to be present at Hyde’s school during the investigation. When he entered UHS, the metal detectors were turned off, as is customary after school, the district said.

Police are asking anyone with information or video of the incident to contact them at 217-384-2320.

Agreements can be made that information is shared privately. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can also submit tips to Crime Stoppers by phone at: 217-373-8477 (TIPS); online at 373tips.com; or the mobile app “P3 Tips”.
