TILTON – Tilton’s next mayor will be a part-time employee, with a salary that reflects the change in responsibility.

Board members in the Vermilion County village of 2,566 residents voted to change the position from a full-time job paying $31,000 a year to a part-time job that pays $12,000 a year, plus $50 per meeting for up to 10 a year.

That means the maximum the next mayor will earn is $18,000, said Billy Wear, who was appointed to the post after 22-year village boss David Phillips resigned last year.

Despite being a small town, the highest elected office in Tilton pays the fifth highest amount in the area, behind Danville, Urbana, Rantoul and Champaign.

Even with the pay cut, Tilton will remain fifth on the compensation list for area mayors, with the new rate matching what Mahomet and Watseka are offering.
