Dinwiddie high school students are taking the lead in planning the first-ever Fall Fest event

DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. – There is a room full of future leaders in class 40 at Dinwiddie Middle School.

Despite not being old enough to drive, these high school students are driven to make a difference in their community.

Over the past few months, students from Ms. Anderson’s leadership development class and students from Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) have joined forces to plan their first-ever fall celebration.

Each student had a different position: from project manager to volunteer coordinator.

Students said there will be dozens of activities, including face painting, arts and crafts, 5-on-5 basketball games, flag football, cornhole, a petting zoo and numerous food truck options.

“We worked really hard to get everything in the right place,” said student Bailey Bateman. “You really never know what someone is going through, so it’s always good to help people.”

Dr. Torrie Walker, principal of Dinwiddie Middle School, said when students presented the idea to her earlier this year, she was excited to say “yes!”

Walker said she watched the students take the skills they learned and take the lead on this massive project.

“The event is student driven, it’s the students who put in all the work to make this happen,” Walker said.

The free event runs Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m

In addition to all the food and games, there will also be a 3km run/walk for participants to participate in. Proceeds will go to the FBLA and the Alzheimer’s Association.

“I just want to help people,” student Adam Brown said.

Although many students said the planning process had its challenges, they all agreed that the hard work was worth it. “We wanted to bring the whole community together, like families and friends, and not just Dinwiddie,” said student Destiny Cecchettimi.
