The College Station City Council approves the master plan for the redevelopment of Mabel Clare Thomas Park

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The College Station City Council voted unanimously to approve the master plan for the redevelopment of Mabel Clare Thomas Park during its Thursday meeting.

Mabel Clare Thomas Park Redevelopment Project

The redevelopment project was a bond approved by voters in 2022. After years of planning and public input, the improved Thomas Park design was unveiled.

With amenities such as renovated sports fields, picnic areas and plenty of space to play, the municipality was eager to give their approval.

“I think we all dream of having a picnic in the park, so anything we can do to expedite this, but other than that, let’s get started,” said Councilwoman Melissa McIlhaney.

The next step in the process is drawing up a draft contract.

Summer events Economic impact

Visit College Station revealed the economic impact of this summer’s events: Mextour, George Strait and the Junior Olympics.

In hotel revenue, the football game generated $1.4 million and George Strait generated $2.2 million.

“In June we really added two football game-sized events for our hotels, for our retail stores and for our restaurants,” said Tourism Manager Jeremiah Cook.

It is estimated that the Junior Olympics had an economic impact of $10.8 million.

Campaign Christmas in College Station

Council also heard more about plans for this year’s “Christmas in College Station” campaign.

A new ad campaign was unveiled with the tagline “Timeless Traditions with a Texas Twist.”

Council members were able to provide feedback on how to expand the area’s holiday celebrations in the coming years.

“I think giving Wolf Pen its unique Christmas in College Station flair would be the next logical step forward. I also think trains are a big part of Christmas and integrate that as it is obviously a big part of our city,” said Councilor William Wright.

Interlocal Agreement for the Northeast Main Sewer Project

An interlocal agreement with the City of Bryan was also approved, in addition to a contract modification order worth more than $1 million. It concerns the design of a new lift station.

This will divert a sewer line, ensuring it avoids the Beverley Estates area, and extend sewer capacity to Northgate.
