The incoming chief executive of a council is expected to be paid £192,000 a year, a council meeting has heard.

Nick Hibberd will receive the annual salary from Bristol City Council when he replaces interim chief executive Paul Martin on January 6.

His salary was revealed at a council meeting on Tuesday after councilor Kelvin Blake successfully challenged the decision to withhold the figures.

Council leader Tony Dyer, council leader, said Bristol had the “lowest salary paid to its chief executive among core cities”.

He told councilors he had been given permission to reveal the salary after initially refusing due to personal details.

Hibberd has over 25 years of high-level experience in local government and most recently worked for the corporate management team of the London Borough of Croydon, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Dyer said the role was independently assessed using an approved methodology and compared with similar roles elsewhere.

He said Hibberd’s salary would increase each year in line with national Joint Negotiating Committee awards for senior council officers.

“I agree that it is critical that we are very careful about how we spend public money,” Dyer said.

“It is also important that we respect individual privacy.”

In August, Dyer warned the council was at risk of leaving bankrupt as it faced a £22 million overspend.

Hibberd has been contacted for comment about his salary.
