Steven Gerard has jokingly suggested that the Football Association and England coaches should be fined next Curtis Jonesstandout performance in England’s victory over Greece. The Liverpool legend made the cheeky comment after Jones’ debut goal for the Three Lions against Greece on Thursday evening.

The 23-year-old marked his first England cap with a brilliant effort, tapping home Morgan Gibbs-White’s cross to secure a 3-0 win in Athens. Jones, who has been in excellent form this season under new head coach Arne Slot Anfieldtook his success with the Reds to the international stage, reports say the mirror.

Gerrard has previous experience coaching Jones during his time at the Liverpool Under 18s before leaving to manage Glasgow Rangers in 2018. The Reds legend, who is now manager of Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq, jokingly criticized the England set-up for taking so long to Recognize Jones’ talents.

“What a player,” Gerrard posted on his Instagram story. “Fine the FA and all the coaches for being late.”

England interim manager Lee Carsley also praised Jones’ performance. “Curtis Jones is an excellent player,” Carsley said ITV.

“He played very well, even without his goal. With his goal it was an excellent performance. There was talk last night about the inexperience in the squad, but these players are playing for their clubs at a very high level.”

Jones himself spoke highly of the freedom his England teammates gave him, noting in particular how Jude Bellingham’s coverage gave him the opportunity to score his goal.

“I just went out there and played freely and I had a smile on my face,” Jones told ITV. “I enjoyed it and I’m happy that I also came away with a goal.

“When you have a team like ours, I can go high and low, get the ball and make plays.

“There are guys who help and there are also guys who say I can also move forward. Jude (Bellingham) stayed behind so I saw I had a chance to go and luckily I scored.”
