New global franchise competition for rugby union clubs in early stages of development | Rugby Union News

A new global franchise competition that could change the rugby landscape is in the very early stages of development.

A globe-trotting competition, similar to Formula 1, has been mooted and could include more than 200 players, with a possible launch in 2026 of men’s and women’s tournaments.

The initial funding is thought to have come from a US lender, but the entire project is currently at a concept stage and not beyond that.

Sky Sports News understands that players do not have to make a choice between the proposed new competition and international rugby.

A key element is that there would be no conflict with the international calendar, giving players the opportunity to still play at Test level, a source said.

There is talk of a possible 14-week season, with players earning significant six-figure salaries.

England full-back Freddie Steward revealed in a speech ahead of Saturday’s match against South Africa that he had no knowledge of the competition.

“This is the first I’m hearing about it. It’s news to me. I don’t have the brain capacity to think about it – I have a Test match in two days,” Steward said.

Sky Sports+ has officially launched and will be integrated into Sky TVstreaming service NOW and the Sky Sports appgiving Sky Sports customers access to more than 50 percent more live sport this year at no extra cost. Read more here.
