Hong Kong energy companies pledge HK0 million in relief measures before Legco meets on prices

Hong Kong’s two energy companies unveiled relief measures worth more than HK$310 million (US$39.8 million) for consumers ahead of a meeting in the legislature to discuss their prices, with some initiatives targeting low-income households and NGOs.

CLP Power said on Friday it would spend HK$240 million on 12 initiatives starting next year, including a grant to replace air conditioners in the homes of disadvantaged residents.

HK Electric, meanwhile, said it would allocate more than HK$70 million to fund 13 community initiatives.

The two energy giants are expected to discuss possible adjustments to electricity prices in the Legislative Council next Tuesday, with both companies remaining tight-lipped on the upcoming talks.

CLP Power serves Kowloon, the New Territories and most of the outlying islands, while HK Electric supplies the islands of Hong Kong and Lamma.

Quince Chong Wai-yan, CLP Power’s chief corporate development officer, said the latest measures were in addition to the HK$1 billion it had spent on community initiatives in recent years.
