After protests, work begins on the Mill Road Bridge

Cambridgeshire County Council has said work has now started to install a controversial bus gate on a city center road.

Work on the Mill Road Bridge, Cambridge, was originally due to start on Monday evening but was hampered by protesters.

Council contractors secured the section between Mill Road and Kingston Street and closed the road at 02:00 GMT on Friday.

The authority said roadworks will now take place continuously until construction is completed.

A statement about the website of the provincial council said it had to look at “another way to create a safe workplace” after operations were disrupted for three days.

It added that the road closure would last at least until the morning of November 16, or until construction by contractors was completed.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the council said there had been “vandalism” against the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in the area. It added that CCTV footage of the crime has been shared with police.

The council urged those who wanted to protest to do so peacefully.
