Police arrest investigation into sexual assault of foreigners in 2018

Durham police have made an arrest in a investigation into sexual abuse dates from 2018.

The incident took place in the early hours of November 24, 2018.

Police have said the female victim was leaving a bar in central Whitby when a suspect approached in his car and offered to give her a lift.

The woman got into the car, after which the suspect allegedly drove him to an empty parking lot, where he then sexually assaulted her.

Police say the suspect then dropped the victim off at a convenience store in the Courtice neighborhood.

After the incident, police issued a public appeal for information and even released a sketch of a suspect in the case, but years passed without any arrests.

In a news release issued Friday, police said investigators discovered “new evidence” sometime this year that led them to investigate a man living in Oshawa.

The suspect, 32-year-old Sopan Pusparajah, was eventually arrested Thursday and charged with one count of sexual assault in the 2018 incident.

Police say investigators believe there may be more victims who have not yet come forward.
