Driver passing stopped traffic hits Painesville student in crosswalk, police say

PAINESVILLE, Ohio (WOIO) – Painesville Police say officers cited a driver Tuesday after a student crossing the street was struck by a car.

Police say the crash happened around 2:36 p.m. when Heritage Middle School was hosting for the day.

According to police, a student was standing in the crosswalk when a driver tried to pass stopped traffic and struck the 12-year-old.

The driver remained at the scene, but police say the child ran back to the school building.

School staff went to the student and called his parents.

Police say EMS checked on the child and fortunately they were not injured.

The driver was cited for actions with intentional or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property.

Police say this happened while the Heritage School Resource Officer was called away to check a fight in the parking lot.

“The Painesville Police Department reminds motorists to use extra caution in school zones, especially during school hours.”
