Election results collection takes place in Pitt County

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Election officials in counties across the state met Friday to ensure votes were properly counted and tabulated in a process known as canvassing.

In Pitt County elections, officials worked tirelessly to ensure every vote was accurate and accounted for.

The canvas also helps determine the winners of particularly close contests, such as the race for Pitt County Board of Commissioners District C between Mac Manning and Billy Parker, which is separated by fewer than 100 votes. The race for state Supreme Court Seat 6 is also close, with Jefferson Griffin beating Allison Riggs by less than one percent.

Etsil Mason, chairman of the Pitt County Board of Elections, worked with other board members throughout the selection process and says, “Especially in Pitt County, we have a great team. We have a great team of Republicans and Democrats who really work together. Our job is to secure the vote for our citizens of Pitt County and make sure their votes count, to make sure voting is easy and convenient for them. That is our job.”

Mason says that as votes are counted, a candidate can request a recount if the margin in a race is less than 1%.

Members of the Board of Elections say that after the results are reported to the state, the state will verify them and then declare an official winner for each race.
