Katie Taylor earns another controversial split-decision victory over Amanda Serrano – Paul vs. Tyson result (highlights)

More than two years removed from their instant classic at Madison Square Garden, Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano returned to the ring to make it one of the most anticipated rematches in boxing history.

On that evening, Taylor defeated Serrano via a closely contested and highly controversial split decision to retain her undisputed lightweight crown. This time, Taylor will stake her undisputed super lightweight world title at the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Round 1-

Serrano gets things going by pumping her jab and Taylor throws a pair of right hooks. Serrano comes in and Taylor lands a nice counter right before circling out of the corner. Serrano continues to push forward and puts Taylor in the corner as we approach the final seconds of the opening round. Serrano blasts Taylor with a nice overhand left hand, sending Taylor bouncing back against the ropes. Taylor circles away, avoiding taking any more damage before the bell sounds.

Round 2

After ending the first round on a strong note, Serrano came out to start the second round in similar fashion. Taylor has other plans though as she lands a big shot to the chin as Serrano marches forward. That got Serrano’s attention, but it didn’t stop her from pushing Taylor into the background.

Round 3

Serrano continues to move forward, but Taylor manages to keep her at bay with a strong jab. Serrano pushes through and throws a two punch combination, but Serrano immediately fires back with a barrage of strikes causing Serrano to retreat. Taylor is looking better every round, but it’s probably not enough to tilt the scorecards in her favor.

Round 4

Taylor gets things going with a nice combination near the turn, but it’s Serrano who picks up the pace. Taylor is more than willing to get into a firefight with Taylor, but she starts to cling every time Serrano closes the distance. There is a brief lull in the fight when Taylor accidentally leans his head towards Serrano. Once the fight resumes, Serrano continues her pursuit and lands a nice right hand near the corner.

Round 5

Serrano closes the distance right out of the gate and Taylor tries to make her pay, but a clinch forces the referee to separate them. Serrano lands a counter left and follows it with a lead left that lands. Serrano walks off Taylor and throws a left hook, but Taylor ducks. Taylor takes every opportunity and gives herself a chance to reset. With 10 seconds left in the round, Serrano rips to the body, and the two fighters trade blows until the bell sounds.

Round 6

Serrano has a nasty cut on her right eye from the fourth round headbutt. Taylor lands a left, which appears to have opened up the gash even further. The referee pauses the action to let the ringside doctor take a look, but allows the fight to continue. Serrano continues to stalk her opponent, but Taylor manages to avoid dangerous attacks.

Round 7

We see some big exchanges in the seventh round as Serrano is blinded by her blood. With Taylor tired and Serrano injured, both women continue to duke it out in the middle of the ring. Taylor lands a solid left hook, but Serrano comes right back with a nasty right hook, followed by another. It seems like Serrano’s cut takes away from her accuracy, but she still seems to be beating Taylor, which will certainly help her on the scorecards.

Round 8

As the fight winds down, both fighters come out and land huge shots. It has become a battle between Taylor’s volume and Serrano’s power. Another clash of heads opens the cut again on Serrano and Taylor scores a solid left. Then we get another head clash, followed by a left hook from Taylor. Serrano and Taylor get close and Taylor is deducted a point for the repeated clash of heads.

Round 9

The cut on Serrano’s eyes is beyond ugly, but she’s still slinging leather with Taylor in a series of insane exchanges. Serrano lands with accuracy, but Taylor doesn’t back down and both women are happy to beat each other bloody in the penultimate round.

Round 10

Taylor is nailed with rights and lefts from Serrano and the challenger makes the most of the striking exchanges. Taylor fires back with a powerful two-fisted attack, but she is hurt and takes an absolute beating in the final round. A body shot pushes Taylor back, but Taylor counters with a huge shot, and both women end the fight by slicing their way to victory and making a statement on the scorecards.

Official result: Katie Taylor def. Amanda Serrano via unanimous decision (95-94, 95-94, 95-94)
