SIT files complaint against director Ranjith, director Ranjith, complaint, Ranjith case, Ranjith sexual assault case, Hema committee report

The case was registered following a sexual harassment complaint filed by a Bangladeshi actress.

According to Mathrubhumi News, Ranjith has been charged under IPC sections 354 and 509.

The actress officially filed a complaint against director Ranjith on August 26, 2024, in connection with sexual advances towards her. According to her complaint filed with the Kochi Police Commissioner, she alleged that the incident took place in 2009 at an apartment in Kadavanthra.

Several female actors have leveled serious allegations against prominent figures in the industry, including director Ranjith and actors Mukesh, Jayasurya and Edavela Babu, among others.

The increase in these charges came in the wake of the judge’s release Hema committee reportwhich revealed disturbing stories of harassment, exploitation and the systematic abuse of women in the industry.

The report, which was made public on August 19 after the names of witnesses and suspects were redacted, noted that the Malayalam film industry is controlled by around 10 to 15 male producers, directors and actors who dominate and control the industry.
