Unknown attackers open fire on Karachi restaurant and flee after throwing a grenade

In the early hours of Saturday, four unidentified gunmen opened fire at a restaurant in Karachi’s Orangi town and threw a hand grenade before fleeing the scene.

Fortunately, the grenade did not explode and a bomb squad successfully made it safe, local police said.

The incident took place at around 4.15am near Frontier Morr, a busy area in Orangi Town.

After the gunfire, the attackers threw the grenade at the closed restaurant and fled on two motorcycles, police sources said.

The restaurant’s owner, who lives on the top floor, reported the gunfire to the police.

The police arrived, secured the area and called in the bomb squad. The BDS successfully disarmed the grenade.

Investigators found three spent bullet casings at the scene and preliminary investigations indicate the attack may have been intended to spread panic in the area.

The restaurant owner noted that the establishment typically closes at midnight. He said he had previously received extortion threats in 2022. A suspect linked to these threats was arrested but released after a year in custody.

Police officers, including SHO Mominabad Shahbaz Yousuf, said the attackers were wearing helmets to conceal their identities.

CCTV footage from the area is currently being reviewed and police are intensifying efforts to track down the attackers.
