Former private school coach arrested for inappropriate relationship

A former track coach who worked at a private high school has been accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police named the suspect as Matthew Elliott, 39.

According to a statement from CMPD on Nov. 8, an adult victim reported to police that she had had an inappropriate relationship with her former cross-country coach while attending the school.

The victim claimed to investigators that Elliott began flirting with her and made numerous advances. He later had an inappropriate relationship with the student, according to CMPD.

Elliott was arrested at his home on Nov. 13, about five days after the student first went to police with allegations against Elliott. He was charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a student. He was released the next day on a $10,000 bond, according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s website.

CMPD did not name the school or say when the alleged relationship began, but according to published reports, Elliott coached at Charlotte Country Day School.
