Fritz stuns Zverev with incredible performance to reach ATP finals final

Taylor Fritz will play in the final of the 2024 ATP Finals in Turin after beating Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals.

Both players earned their spots in the semifinals at the 2024 ATP Finals in Turin, but Zverev shone brighter in the three round-robin matches. He defeated all his opponents, including Carlos Alcaraz.

As a result, he entered the semi-finals as the top seed from his group, while the American player was the second player in his group behind Jannik Sinner, who will face Casper Ruud in the other semi-final.

Previously, Zverev and Fritz met eleven times, with the American leading the H2H 6-5. This year, Fritz won three of the four matches they played, but he still didn’t come into this match as the favorite given Zverev’s form at the event.

Moreover, he previously won the Paris Masters, but he was unable to reproduce that form in the first set of this match. Zverev’s forehand was far from consistent, while Fritz played out of this world.

The American rarely missed from this forehand and he was the much better player. As a result of his activity, he worked his way to two break points in the sixth game, converting the second for a 4-2 lead.

His perfect serve throughout the set allowed him to serve it out, easily winning the opening set of the match 6-3 and taking an important lead.

However, that did not happen without reaction. Zverev started the second set better and at the beginning of the set there was also a video review, which you rarely see in tennis.

When Zverev was chasing a short ball in the second game, referee Adel Nour shouted ‘not up’, meaning the German player lost the point, which he probably would have lost anyway as his opponent had an easy volley on the just had.

Understandably, Zverev asked for the video review, which showed that he was right, and although his opponent had an easy volley at the net, the rally had to be replayed.

The match then continued without major problems, and already in the fourth game he broke and led 3-1, and confirmed it with a lead to lead 4-1.

The world number 2 then faced a break point in the seventh game, when he did not have the best game, but he managed to save it and also serve out the set, winning 6-3, to take the to force the decision maker.

There was very little between the two and they continued to fight for every ball. In the fifth game, Fritz had a terrible start to his serve, falling behind 0-40 and facing three consecutive break points.

He was able to overcome that deficit by saving all three break points and leading 3-2 after the match. A few games later, when he was leading 4-3, he was the player who had three break points, but the American player could not convert any.

That could hurt him a few games later as he conceded break points at 5-5, which was also a small match point for Zverev. However, the German player could not take advantage of it and as a result the match was decided in the third set tiebreak.

In the tiebreak, Fritz served better and he also managed to tempt his opponent into making mistakes. He worked his way to match points and converted the first by winning the match 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3) to reach the final of the 2024 ATP Finals.

In the final he plays against the winner of the match between Sinner and Ruud, where the Italian player gains a lot of favor, especially in front of his own audience.
