Maine man charged after allegedly crashing into a house, setting a fire and firing shots

RUMFORD (WGME) – A Maine man is charged with attempted murder and arson after police say he crashed his vehicle into a Rumford home, set the house on fire and then shot into the home.

Police say they responded to reports of a man shooting on Route 232 in the village of Rumford Corner, between East Bethel Road and South Rumford Road, on November 5 around 8 p.m.

When officers arrived, police said they discovered the suspect, 59-year-old Billy Morvent, crashed his vehicle into a house at 61 Route 232, allegedly set the house on fire and then shot the house and two people shot before running away. away.

Around 1 a.m. on November 6, police said they found Morvent, who was suffering from a life-threatening self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he remains hospitalized.

On Thursday, authorities charged Morvent with three counts of attempted murder, one count of attempted arson, three counts of threatening with a dangerous weapon and one count of attempted murder.

Morvent is expected to attend a hearing via video conference Friday afternoon.
