The accused has been identified as Shilpi, wife of Inspector Nirmal Singh, posted in the CID staff in Panchkula.

A police spokesman said she was brought to court on Saturday and spent three days in custody.

On Monday, the officer’s family members had found Raj Bala’s strangled body at their home when she was alone. While Bala’s husband Balinder Singh, a lawyer, was at the district court for work, Shilpi, who runs a boutique, was also not at home.

So investigators assumed it was a robbery 75 lakh cash and jewelery were also missing. Following this, Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajiv Deswal formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT)

under Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rajesh Kumar, including in-charge of CIA-1, CIA-2, Burglary Staff and SHO, Women’s Police Station.

Addressing a press conference to announce the findings, DSP Kumar said that during the investigation, CCTV cameras in the area were checked and suspects were interrogated.

“On Friday, Shilpi was detained and interrogated before she was formally arrested for the crime. It was revealed that both Shilpi and Raj had an argument on the day of the murder and the former killed her mother-in-law in a fit of rage,” he added.

The DSP further said that it also came to light that the suspect wanted to portray it as a robbery and deliberately kept belongings of their almirah at other places.

“Shilpi and Balinder reached their house at the same time in different vehicles, but she sent her father-in-law into the house first so that he could discover the body. The evidence collected so far suggests that there were fresh injuries on Shilpi’s arms and she was also having an affair,” he added.
