Incredible bridge opened for HS2 between two major regions | UK | News

A new road bridge linking a major city has been completed as work continues on the HS2 railway line.

The A418 overbridge at Hartwell spans approximately 100 meters over a passageway that will be used by HS2 rail services between London and the West Midlands.

Ben Sebastian-Green, senior project manager for HS2 Ltdhighlighted that the new bridge, together with the recently opened A41 bridge, are part of key routes linking Aylesbury.

He explained: “The A41 and A418 are two of the main roads into Aylesbury, so it’s great to have both bridges open to the public.

“I would like to thank everyone in our supply chain who worked so hard to complete this work – and of course the local community for their patience during the recent road closures required to deliver the project safely.”

The new bridge was part of a redevelopment project of the A418 to protect road users from trains on the new HS2 railway line.

The bridge is constructed from 21 U-shaped concrete beams that form three spans along the deck and wing walls.

Other changes during this week’s main road closure included the installation of 8.8 kilometers of telephone cables, a kilometer of gas and water pipes and expanded cycle paths.

The HS2 line, which will run from Handsacre in Staffordshire to Old Oak Common in London, will pass through around 500 different bridge structures.

These range from ‘green bridges’, which allow wildlife to cross roads and railway lines without the risk of accidents, to the Colne Valley viaduct, the longest in Britain.

It is hoped that the higher speed of the HS2 trains will improve journeys between the Midlands and London while freeing up space on other lines for freight and local services.
