DU students are demanding cancellation of their affiliation with 7 colleges

Students of Dhaka University (DU) have demanded cancellation of the affiliation of seven colleges to the university.

They held a press conference at the university’s Madhur Canteen today (November 17) on the issue.

During the briefing, Mohammad Abbasuddin, a student of DU’s Arabic department from the 2018-2019 session, said: “The movement to cancel the affiliation of the seven colleges started in 2019, where advisors Asif Mahmud and Nahid Islam played an important played a role. They were even victims of an attack by the Chhatra League.”

Abbasuddin further said, “The administration of Dhaka University has failed to provide adequate facilities for its students yet has taken responsibility for around 2.67 lakh students of the seven colleges. As a result, we are constantly confronted with various problems. Therefore, we demand cancellation of the affiliation of the seven colleges with DU.”

Nafiur Rahman, a student of the Department of Accounting, said, “DU students face many administrative challenges due to the seven colleges. DU teachers spend time in the seven colleges, which adversely affects the quality of our education. Issues such as seat shortages, disrupted regular classes and delays in publishing results have become more prominent.”

He also mentioned that the seven colleges are included in the university’s international rankings, which affects the university’s position.

Moreover, the students have stated that they will strongly oppose the enrollment of students from the seven colleges affiliated to DU, from the 2024-2025 academic session.

“If a new building is constructed for the seven colleges, we will launch a fierce protest and lock down all the university buildings. Our movement will continue until our demands are met,” Nafiur Rahman said.
