I’m running out of ways to tell you how insane “Lioness” is

‘Lioness’ S2, E5 goes rogueDecisive

Lioness traveled to new extremes last week. Searching for drugs, the secret CIA team came across a Mexican warehouse, but instead they found hundreds of children inside. Season 2 is non-stop chaos. Lioness is already dealing with a list of crimes ranging from the kidnapping of a congressman to disrupting NATO’s world order with Chinese spies hiding in Mexico. How does the Lioness team move forward now that they have accidentally discovered what is probably the largest child trafficking ring in history?

Well, Joe (Zoe Saldaña) is absolutely furious. She yells at everyone when her team arrives back at the base, including the mess hall officials who were preparing lunch when they burst in. “My intel said the warehouse was a transfer station,” explains new recruit Gutierrez (Kirk Acevedo) in an attempt to win the award for Raspiest Voice on TV. Joe yells back, “IT’S A FUCKING TRANSFER STATION!” in ALL CAPS. It’s rare to hear someone at full volume like that, but Saldaña really cares Lioness her all. “Those are kids,” she tells Kyle (Thad Luckinbill), “and in two weeks they’re going to be someone’s fucking sex toy.” Nice content here every week Lioness.

Naturally, Josephina Carrillo (Genesis Rodriguez) wants to get out of this mess. She “can’t wait to testify” to the team. The new Lioness agent struggles to understand how to look her loved ones in the eyes and then tear their entire world apart. “Could you do that?” she asks Cruz (Laysla De Oliveira). Easy. Fans of the first season Cruz will definitely remember that can do that. She tries to convince Carrillo that anyone is bad if he profits from the suffering of others, even her father. “We can choose not to fight, but if we choose not to fight, the warehouses will become full of children,” she says.

Still, Cruz doesn’t understand why Josephina’s father should die. He is not their target. Why can’t the Justice Department offer her father witness protection? Joe is skeptical. “Everyone in their life is a spy,” she warns. “Cartels do not use surveillance equipment. They use people, and so are their people everywhere.” Joe makes the Mexican cartel Los Tigres sound like they’re the real deal John Wick assassins guild. After some coercion, Joe agrees to try a less violent approach. She has a lot of respect for Cruz. “She’s better at this than me,” she tells Kaitlyn (Nicole Kidman). “She is just like me, only she has no husband and two daughters.” If Cruz Carrillo can help convert her father without bloodshed, it will certainly make the mission easier.

Stage left: Pablo Carrillo. If you’re feeling lost, this is a good time to pause and think about what on earth is going on here. In the season 2 premierethe Los Tigres Cartel has kidnapped a congressman. Joe and series creator Taylor Sheridan (who played a Delta Force operator named Cody) then led a rescue mission to save the congressman. The CIA believes the random crime was intended to provoke the US into attacking Mexico so that its aggression would anger NATO and allow China to invade Taiwan. Furthermore, the CIA insists that the Los Tigres Cartel is harboring a Chinese spy.

Whoever the Chinese threat is, they are the real target of the Lioness team. So the US needs Josephina to connect her father to her uncle, the leader of Los Tigres. From there, they should have enough access to determine the identity of the Chinese agent and take it out. Do you have all that? I’m incredibly surprised that I do, especially since there’s now a whole subplot about child trafficking.

Either way, it’s time for the Carrillo family to gather around the dinner table and watch Josephina’s father turn this reunion with his daughter into a bizarre sermon. He spouts his opinions on the world, starting with his dissatisfaction with the military hiring women. Pablo’s own daughter was an Apache pilot, and he even notes that she should have earned a medal because few women serve in that capacity. For some reason he still doesn’t like it. When Cruz mentions that she served in the Marines, he notes that our armed forces have declined since the US allowed women and gender non-conforming individuals to serve.

“The first sign that an empire is failing is when the population questions the institutions on which the empire is built,” he says. It feels like I’m in the Death Star. “They destroy the wrong symbols, attack themselves like a cancer, attack the people who protect the empire, and then the wolves come,” he continues. ‘The emperor will be slaughtered. And a new empire will rise from its ashes. Then the cycle starts again.” The room remains silent. Great dinner table conversation, Dad! “Eat the soup first,” he says, then quickly changes the conversation. “It’s very refreshing.” This man is out of control. I don’t see him switching sides.

Joe goes rogue.Decisive

Meanwhile, Gutierrez, along with the rest of Joe’s team, leads a rogue attack on the traffickers. I thought Joe went home to spend time with her family, but she’s part of the murder squad too. She follows a young girl from the warehouse. Furthermore, the CIA knows nothing about this mission. They would never have approved it.

I don’t know how many fighters Joe’s team expected to find here, but they are met with heavy gunfire under the cover of darkness. Armed drones tear apart Gutierrez’s team and some DEA agents. Joe reaches the girl, but not before a man with a bomb strapped to his chest detonates the explosives, possibly killing everyone. What’s happening here?! Joe survives, but that’s all the information we have until next week. Pure madness.
