The fight against illegal mining

STILFONTEIN, North West – There are growing calls for the South African Police Service to provide space for illegal miners who remain underground in the Orkney and Stilfontein shafts in the North West to return to the surface to gain access to food and water.

The High Court in Pretoria has ordered all parties to end the blockade of the shafts.

But South African police say its Operation Vala Mgodi is still actively preventing more illegal miners from going underground.
