JAB returns to two tries; Restores previous eligibility criteria

Kota: The number of attempts allowed for the JEE Advanced exam has undergone another major revision. IIT Kanpur, the organizing institute, had recently announced an increase in the number of attempts for the exam from two to three. However, this decision was reversed following a meeting of the Joint Admission Board (JAB). On Monday, IIT Kanpur issued a press release reducing the number of attempts to two.

“The Joint Admission Board (JAB) has decided to reinstate the earlier eligibility criterion used in previous years regarding the number of attempts in JEE (Advanced), replacing the criterion mentioned in the press release dated November 5, 2024. This was done after considering several competing requirements at JAB’s meeting on November 15, 2024. This resulted in the restoration of the previous eligibility criteria followed since 2013. All other eligibility criteria remain the same. For more details, please refer to the website jeeadv.ac.in,” the official notice said.

Education expert Amit Ahuja highlighted that many students had already started preparing for JEE Advanced after the initial announcement of three attempts by IIT Kanpur. In fact, thousands had registered for the JEE Main exam in the hope of securing a seat in IITs. The reversal of this decision has left many students disappointed as they started their preparation with renewed determination.

Ahuja speculated that the decision to return to two attempts may have been made to avoid setting a precedent. If students were given three chances this year, they could push for the rule to become permanent in the future. To avoid such demands, the rule was probably repealed.

The decision has dashed the hopes of thousands of aspirants who were banking on the extra opportunity to secure admission into IITs. Many students expressed disappointment because they had already started preparations only to find that their eligibility was revoked.

This sudden change has sparked widespread debate among students and teachers, with many calling for clarity and consistency in exam policies.
