According to a probable cause statement, when officers arrived on the scene, 24-year-old Kandi Galaviz told them, “I shot him” and was taken into custody.

Officers found 34-year-old Waleed Shaban lying on his back in the parking lot of a business. He suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead.

Court documents show detectives spoke with an employee of the business, who told them Galaviz had arrived at the parking lot shortly before the shooting.

The employee said she got out of a maroon Cadillac sedan and spoke to him briefly, reportedly asking him what time he got off work because “I don’t want you to get caught in this crossfire.” He said Galaviz and Shaban started arguing and it became physical, at which point Galaviz shot Shaban.

Detectives spoke with the owner of the maroon Cadillac that Galaviz drove to the business. The driver stated that Galaviz asked to stop there so she could pick up her belongings, but became angry when items appeared to be missing. He confirmed that Galaviz and Shaban fought, with Shaban reportedly pushing Galaviz to the ground.

A separate witness, whose identity was withheld, said she arrived at the business just as Galaviz shot Shaban. She said someone at the scene called her and told her she had to get there quickly. She said she could hear Galaviz yelling in the background of the conversation.

The witness said she performed CPR on Shaban until police arrived.

Surveillance video shows the maroon Cadillac arrived at the business at 12:27 p.m. At 12:46 a physical altercation between Kandi and Shaban is seen. At 12:47, Shaban is seen on the ground and does not get up. The police arrived at 12:50 p.m

Galaviz is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. She is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center on a $250,000 bond.
