The silent repression in Venezuela: the increase in passport cancellations

In a disturbing turn of events, Venezuela has reportedly annulled the passports of more than 40 journalists and activists following the controversial re-election of President Nicolás Maduro. The Financial Times, citing the Peace Laboratory, highlighted this trend as part of the regime’s aggressive suppression effort against dissenting voices.

The Peace Lab expressed concern that the actual number of affected individuals is likely higher, attributing the discrepancy to widespread fear of retaliation that prevents many from speaking out. These cancellations frequently occur at the country’s main airport when citizens attempt to travel.

The human rights group’s co-director, Rafael Uzcátegui, noted that this tactic allows the government to neutralize opposition with minimal political consequences compared to actions such as murder or torture. The measure coincides closely with the government’s solidification of control following a controversial electoral process.
