Kuldeep, 37, a resident of Mohali, was arrested along with an accomplice during a routine anti-crime patrol by the district crime cell.

The arrest took place around 8.50 pm near the IRB complex when ASI Kulwant Singh and his team were conducting patrols to curb theft and theft incidents in the city.

The police officers noticed that two men were acting suspiciously, carrying bags in their right hands and trying to run away quickly when they noticed the patrol. Police intercepted the pair, sparking a search that resulted in the discovery of 10.8 grams of heroin from Kuldeep and 8.20 grams of heroin from his companion, Kulwinder Singh, alias Lamp, 32, a resident of Khuda Lahora village.

The prime suspect, Kuldeep, was a constable in the Chandigarh police until August this year, when he took mandatory retirement due to a series of disciplinary issues. Due to his prolonged absence, he was subjected to multiple departmental investigations. This is not the first time he has been involved in criminal activities as he was previously arrested for car theft and a fraud case is pending against him at the Sector-11 police station.

Police are now investigating the source of the heroin and whether Kuldeep’s past connections as a former police officer played a role in facilitating his involvement in illegal activities.

However, the second suspect Kulwinder Singh has no previous criminal record.

An FIR has been lodged at Sarangpur police station under Sections 21 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
