Through their neighborhood association, residents failed to prevent the demolition of their homes, leaving them homeless.

Why Nairobi County is demolishing Woodley houses

The demolition of 43 homes followed the expiration of a 90-day holiday notice issued by Nairobi Province to pave the way for the construction of 1,975 homes over the next three years.

They opposed the measure, claiming there was a lack of involvement in the decision-making process before the demolition, according to a Citizen TV report.

After the first phase of demolition, residents expected to be in the second plot have expressed fear as they do not know when the provincial government will send bulldozers to demolish their homes.

Pauline Miduda, a resident, asked Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration to inform them when their houses will be demolished early enough to avoid meeting the fate of the 43 households.

“They must let us know in a timely manner so that we do not have to experience the pain that these people have suffered. When you have lived in a place for more than 10 years, it is only natural that you have an attachment to it. To the extent that Plot 2 is not affected, they can come and give us some agreement and assurance that we will get houses when they are ready,” she stated.

Another resident, David Kose, said there should be a proper framework to handle the entire process peacefully.

“We are afraid; After seeing what happened to our neighbors, we must prepare. As residents of Woodley, we ask for a better framework and measures to make this process peaceful and seamless,” Kose said.
