Cypress Ranch High School student charged with assault after classmate nearly goes blind in one eye

CYPRESS, Texas (KTRK) — A Cypress teen is facing serious charges after allegedly attacking one of his classmates.

Authorities say it happened on the morning of Nov. 11 in a classroom at Cypress Ranch High School.

The victim, Anthony Vasquez, said he spent six days in the hospital and almost lost an eye.

“I thought, ‘I could die right now.’ Like, ‘I could be dead,’” Vasquez said.

The suspect, identified in court documents as Donovan Hernandez, allegedly approached Vasquez from behind while he was talking to a teacher.

Vasquez said he didn’t realize Hernandez was already in the classroom.

“Out of nowhere I feel a huge pain in the back of my head and my eye… like the left side of my face,” Vasquez said.

The 17-year-old said he was eventually thrown over some desks and fell to the ground.

He claims he was face down and did not fight back at the time.

“He kept hitting me, right? So I thought, ‘I’m going to get hurt. I’m going to try to stop him.’ So I just grabbed both of his wrists and held them tight,” Vasquez said.

Vasquez said administrators and Cy-fair ISD police eventually intervened.

Hernandez has since been arrested and is charged with assault causing bodily harm.

The school district confirmed the attack occurred but said only that it was under investigation.

“Why do you think he did this,” ABC13’s Alex Bozarjian asked.

“Well, we had some issues in the past, but I always thought, ‘Hey, we can talk this out,’” Vasquez said.

According to Vasquez, their problems were about a girl.

The attorney representing Hernandez tells ABC13 that his client has reached a boiling point after being constantly harassed by Vasquez.

Vasquez claims they haven’t spoken since last year.

“I always thought, ‘I don’t know what he can do to me,’” Vasquez said. “I felt really paranoid.”

Vasquez underwent surgery on his eye and said he has been coughing up blood since he got out of the hospital.

His family hopes this hasn’t all been in vain. They want change, so they started an Instagram page to start a conversation about bullying and violence in schools.

“You don’t really want this to happen to anyone, and it’s not a good feeling at all,” Vasquez said.
