What Trent Bray said after Oregon State’s loss at Nevada

After the Oregon State Beavers lost 42-37 to Nevada on Saturday night, Beavers coach Trent Bray offered his thoughts on OSU’s defense, the Beavers’ comebacks, what happened in Nevada’s pick six and more more.

Here’s a transcript of Bray’s postgame interview session with reporters.

Q: Well, coach, it all comes down to the last play. Talk about the comeback, but also about the frustrating night you had.

Bray: Yeah, the comeback was what these guys are all about. They continue to fight until the end and will continue to fight. And that’s what happened. As far as frustration goes, you just can’t play defense like that and win. So that’s it.

Q: Obviously, you’re hurt. How much of that is injuries, how much is simply not being in the right place on defense?

Bray: Obviously having a bunch of guys down doesn’t help, but it still shouldn’t be like that, in my opinion. And then we have to fix that.

Q: Is the frustration with the defense just the run defense?

Bray: The run defense. I mean, yeah, that’s the biggest frustration.

Q: As far as turnovers go, you had three big ones tonight.

Bray: Yes, you have to give Nevada credit. They played hard, as we knew they would. They’re a good team, as we knew they were, and they made the plays tonight when they counted. And you have to give them credit for that.

Q: In pick six, it seemed like he just looked at his reads. Is that what you saw? What did you see in that play?

Bray: I think it was a great move by the kid from Nevada. I mean, he anticipated it, jumped and made a great catch and then caught it. So sometimes it’s just a great play by the defender.

Q: (Anthony) Hankerson… It’s a loss, but he played with all his heart and showed some really good things out there.

Bray: Yes, yes, which is no surprise to me. He’s as tough as anyone on our team and as talented as anyone on our team, and he just runs so hard.

Q: When you got to halftime, what was going through your mind in terms of run defense? Were the things you actually changed and it still didn’t work?

Bray: It’s difficult to answer at this point without actually observing. But it’s just general frustration.

Q: Do you foresee Jam (Griffin) missing multiple games? Or what is his status going forward?

Bray: It’s not something I’m going to talk about now.

Q: (Andy) Alfieri playing on both sides of the ball now. He had a lot of chances on defense tonight.

Bray: He did and will continue to get more.

Q: What does a loss like that do for you long-term in the season?

Bray: Nothing, as far as we can control. We need to find a way to recover, come back and win the rest of our games. That’s all we can control.

Q: You hit that beautiful side kick, but you couldn’t take advantage of it. That was difficult.

Bray: Yes, it was well executed, he got the ball in midfield at a crucial moment and, yes, it was pitiful.

Q: Are you worried about the team’s psyche after a game like this?

Bray: I’m not, I’m not. These guys are winners, they are competitors. I don’t worry about that.
