Lessons from the wild: how animal and human behavior are linked

Nature, including animals, has inspired and guided us humans from the very beginning of time. Every invention, big or small, is fueled by nature and its ways. As a nature and wildlife photographer, I have keenly observed the behavior of animals and am constantly informed about matters that go beyond common sense. I have often found the simplest solutions to the most complex problems by letting nature teach me her ways.

Going back to the early days of human evolution, we mimicked animals and learned the most efficient ways to perform tasks. The science behind it may have been discovered much later, but the basis came from looking at the animal world. From choosing the fastest and safest route to a destination to ensuring people didn’t eat poisonous food, all the knowledge came from observing the behavior of animals in the region. Their impeccable architectural skills, like those of intricately designed ant colonies, have inspired human habitations for generations. Even today, animal behavior continues to drive human innovation.

Social structures seen in animals, such as wolves and other pack-dwelling creatures, have also been observed and imitated by humans. Looking at these animals and the dynamics within their groups gave us insight into the importance of a structured life and the power that comes from unity. No species is superior in intelligence, but some have been on this planet longer and have acquired a greater body of knowledge. Both humans and animals have learned the importance of adaptation, which is one of the main reasons we have thrived over the centuries.

There are countless legends of great people who are inspired by the behavior of animals. For example, the story of King Bruce and the Gritty Spider teaches perseverance and hope. Watching bees tirelessly contribute to the balance of the planet while remaining humble teaches us lessons in working hard without seeking recognition. The comparisons can go on forever, but what sets humans apart is our ability to improvise based on these proven methods used by animals and adapt them to our specific needs.

Years of observing animal behavior have profoundly influenced my love of nature. Understanding their way of life has shaped my perspective on everything. I am inspired by their courage, selflessness, love, mutual respect and their ability to coexist. Their struggle for survival has often made me realize how trivial some of our challenges are in comparison.

Traveling and witnessing the vastness of nature has made me aware of how tiny we are in this immense world. Yet it has also made me realize that even the smallest contribution from us is essential to leave a better world for future generations. Nature has taught me the importance of purpose.

There is always something to learn from the wild, and we just have to look for it in the right places. Animals and humans are connected in more ways than just behavior, and each plays a role in maintaining balance on the planet. The mysteries of our complex, beautiful world are still waiting to be solved – and animals may hold some of the answers we are looking for.
