PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – High pressure over the Ohio Valley brought calm winds and mostly clear skies early Sunday morning.

In many places the temperature is around or below freezing. Some patchy river and valley fog is possible around sunrise, otherwise the fog will fade during the day.

A band of mid to high clouds will also move across our southernmost provinces this morning, but these will clear late morning into the afternoon, allowing for mostly sunny skies.

Seasonal temperatures are expected Sunday afternoon with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s, followed by lows in the low to mid 30s by Monday morning.

A ridge of high pressure will strengthen early this week, promoting the return of a wave of warm air from the southwest. Temperatures will be well above normal, especially Tuesday through Thursday next week. On Tuesday, the initial surge of some moisture moving up into the atmosphere, accompanied by a weak disturbance, may produce isolated showers in areas north of Pittsburgh toward I-80 and Lake Erie in the morning hours.

Otherwise, temperatures will continue to rise to unusually high levels on Wednesday and Thursday, with a plethora of record highs likely in the Midwest and Southern States.

Record highs are possible on Halloween, depending on how much cloud cover is present and the timing of the next storm system. Model guidance from Sunday morning has slowed the progression of the upper level storm system, boosting the eastern progression of the front on Thursday, so the odds of us at least tying the record on Halloween appear slightly better.

As the front moves into the region, accompanied by a layer of low moisture, scattered showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms are possible after sunset Thursday evening and will continue into Friday morning. I expect coverage and intensity to be higher over our western and northern counties before breaking up once drier and more stable air is achieved toward the Laurel Highlands.

Slightly cooler weather will follow towards the end of next week, but temperatures will still be above average.
