Laois TD announces his resignation from Sinn Féin – News

Laois/Offaly TD, Brian Stanley has announced his resignation from the Sinn Féin party. Cllr Stanley, who is chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, said he was resigning from the beleaguered party after being subjected to what he described as a “Kanagroo Tribunal”. Deputy Stanley’s resignation is another blow to the Sinn Féin party and its leader, Mary Lou McDonald. It comes days after Kildare South and Laois native Patricia Ryan announced their resignation from the party.

In a statement released last night, Deputy Stanley said: “I announce my resignation from Sinn Féin with immediate effect. After 40 years of service to Sinn Féin, I will now continue to work as an independent republican TD on behalf of the voters, who have always treated me fairly and respectfully.

In recent months, a certain clique within the party has done everything to damage my reputation and character. No effort was spared by them in this regard.

Following a “report”, I was recently taken to an internal party “inquiry”. Taking into account what happened and the work of my legal team, what is very clear is that this process lacked objectivity, had serious flaws and was devoid of impartiality.

It was demonstrated that this “inquiry” lacked any shred of credibility, mainly due to a significant abuse of the process. In many ways it felt like a kind of kangaroo court. The legal examination of this issue will continue.

Given what I have experienced and how Sinn Féin has dealt with this and other issues across the party in recent months, I can no longer have confidence in it.”

Further details of Deputy Stanley’s resignation will be published in next week’s edition of the Laois Nationalist newspaper and online.
