Driver caught speeding at 167km/h in Co Meath

A driver has been caught driving almost 105 miles per hour in Co Meath.

Gardai have urged motorists across the state to drive less this weekend.

Officers have been out since Saturday morning to detect bad driving as part of the road safety operation over the October bank holiday.

From Saturday morning to Sunday morning, 79,742 vehicles were checked for speeding.

A Garda spokesman said it was a positive sign that the majority were driving within the posted speed limit.

But they said 136 motorists were speeding.

Among those caught speeding, one was doing 88km/h in a 50km/h zone on Newcastle Road, Galway, and another was doing 90km/h in a 60km/h zone on Callan Road, Kilkenny.

Another motorist was caught doing 167km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R162, Leggagh, Castletown, Meath, while another motorist was doing 122km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N13 , Maghera Beg, Manorcunningham, Donegal.

The Garda spokesperson added: “A Garda Siochana is advising all motorists to slow down and drive safely today and for the rest of the long weekend as so many of us take to the roads.”
