Terrifying footage shows passengers fleeing the runway as the plane catches fire

Terrifying footage has emerged showing passengers fleeing from a Russian plane that caught fire on the runway of Antalya Airport in Turkey on Sunday (24 November). The Russian-made Sukhoi Superjet 100 passenger plane carrying 89 passengers and six crew, operated by Azimuth Airline, was en route to Antalya from Sochi when it caught fire, reportedly due to a hard landing that damaged one of the engines. Although the fire spread quickly, there were no reports of injuries when authorities opened an investigation into the incident.

Suat Seyitoglu, deputy governor of Antalya, confirmed that the fire occurred during landing but was quickly brought under control by first responders.

“All passengers were evacuated without injuries and fortunately no one was injured,” Seyitoglu said Turkey today.

Meanwhile, a ministry statement added: “A fire broke out during landing in the engine of the aircraft of type SU95, registered RA89085, owned by Azimuth Airlines, which was en route from Sochi Airport in Russia to the airport from Antalya. After landing at Antalya Airport at 9 p.m.: On September 34, an emergency call was made by the airline pilots due to the fire.”

‘Leave luggage’

In one of the videos that went viral on social media, users pointed out that passengers risked their lives by taking their carry-on luggage with them while sliding down the emergency slide.

“In case of an evacuation you have to leave your suitcases!!!!!!!! Oh lord, after I saw the passengers rolling their suitcases, I won’t think about the chaos in the plane. This behavior is killing people,” said the one user, while another added: “Anyone who takes their carry-on luggage on an emergency evacuation should be banned from flying for life.”

A third commented: “And they all took their carry-ons. This is ridiculous.”

Other images showed emergency units battling the blaze as dark smoke and flames were visible.

This is not the first time a Superjet has caught fire during landing. In 2019, Aeroflot Flight SU1492 was struck by lightning after taking off from Moscow, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing and burst into flames at Sheremetyevo International Airport.

At least 41 passengers were killed in the incident, as families of the victims claimed some passengers had delayed the evacuation by trying to save their luggage.
