The United Nations describes in a new global femicide report that “the home is the most dangerous place for women” in the world.

According to The Guardian, New global estimates of femicide show that an estimated 140 women and girls are murdered worldwide every day at the hands of their partner or family member.

UN Women’s disturbing report shows that 85,000 women and girls will have been deliberately killed by men in 2023, with 60% (51,100) of deaths committed by someone close to the victim.

The intergovernmental organization noted that data shows that globally, the “most dangerous” place for women is their home, where the majority of women die at the hands of men.

UN Women Deputy Executive Director Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda said: “What the data tells us is that it is the private and domestic spheres of women’s lives, where they should be safest, that so many of them are exposed to deadly violence.”

“We see the figures in this report as the tip of the iceberg. because we know that not all female deaths are recorded and not all causes of death are accurately recorded as femicides, and there were many communities where we did not have access to any information,” she added.

The report shows that both women and men are victims of intimate partner or family violence, but by 2023 men were responsible for 80% of all homicide victims worldwide.

In 2023, only 12% of men were murdered by family members, compared to 60% of women.

Furthermore, according to the global report, the number of gender-related homicides of women and girls has decreased over the past year as 89,000 intentional deaths of women and girls were reported in 2022, but the number of deaths by intimate partners and family members has increased in 2022. 2023.
