Yoruba Council explains why Tinubu appointed Bianca Ojukwu as Minister

FCT, Abuja—In response to the growing discussions over the appointment of Bianca Ojukwu as Minister, the Yoruba Council Worldwide has sent a strong message to the Igbo community.

In particular, Barr. Oladotun Hassan, chairman of the council, urged them to view the selection as a mark of merit rather than ethnic favoritism.

Legit.ng the chairman reported Tinubu five ministers dismissed and reinstated ten others in a major cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday, October 23.

Tinubu also appointed about seven new ministers, among whom Bianca Okukwu was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs.

President Tinubu’s decision to engage Binaca Ojukwu was confronted widespread criticismespecially from the Igbo tribe, who argued that it was a strategic move aimed at securing votes from the east for the 2027 elections.

Reacting to this development, Hassan emphasized that the decision was not part of any ethnic negotiations.

The lawyer additionally rejected the claim that the appointment would serve as a political strategy for the 2027 elections.

The Yoruba Council leader underlined the value of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to a merit-based system, noting Ojukwu’s qualifications and previous experience as a former ambassador.

He said:

“This appointment is not about ethnic negotiations. The President has carefully considered her intellectual capabilities and experience. Serving as minister is a great opportunity for her and for the region she represents.”

The council further called on the Igbo community to avoid divisive interpretations of the appointment and instead appreciate the skills that Ojukwu brings to her new role.

His words:

“Let the Igbo know that this appointment should not be seen as a strategic move or as ‘playing the ostrich’. It’s about her qualifications and the president’s confidence in her abilities.”

Newly appointed ministers charged with active involvement

The council also emphasized the importance of active and assertive involvement of all ministers and encouraged them to embody the government’s objectives.

He said:

“Ministers are not just handbags; they must take a strong stand in meeting the needs of the people.

“It is essential that ministers represent not only their ministries, but also the government’s commitment to serve.”

Tinubu said he had to fire more ministers

Previously, Legit.ng reported that Ali Ndume, the senator’s representative Borno South has asked President Bola Tinubu to fire more ministers.
