ORIGINAL STORY (POSTED 11/14/24):

CABARRUS CO., NC – Cabarrus County detectives hope a new lead will help them identify a woman found dead on the side of the road. Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office said a fisherman came across the body of a woman who has not yet been identified. The 911 caller found the woman’s body on Nov. 4 at the edge of Rocky River Bridge along US Highway 601. WCCB received the 911 call from the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office.

“Hey, I’m calling because I just found a body,” the caller told a 911 dispatcher. ‘Looks like a female. She has a garbage bag over her head.”

Lt. Chris Smith said the body was decomposed when officers found it. Investigators still don’t know who the woman is. Detectives have released photos of three leads in the case. The latest photo is of the woman’s toenail. It shows a nail painted white and decorated with rhinestones and a gold palmetto tree charm. The woman also wore a gold chain with fifteen rainbow-colored stones. Investigators said the woman was wearing sweatpants with a clear photo of a race car underneath a green, white and red line. There is a checkered pattern underneath the racing car on the pants.

Lt. Smith said the leads have yielded tips, but so far none of those tips have proven credible. The Sheriff’s Office wants to show these photos to as many people as possible in hopes of identifying the woman’s body. A medical examiner is still investigating how the woman died. Lt. Smith hopes more information about the woman’s identity will come to light once the autopsy is completed.
