I was shocked and very upset by the results of the presidential elections. Moreover, I am equally upset by the people Trump nominates to lead our nation. Inexperience and loyalty to oneself seem to be the most important characteristics.

Still, I learned a lot about our country in a short time. I have been both blind and deaf to what so many people have said.

I’m not talking about right-wing politicians and ideologues. I’m talking about the American citizens for whom this nation and its economy have not worked. They have been asking for help for a long time, and our leaders have not listened.

Unfortunately, Mr. Trump won’t listen or help them either, but he will certainly try to break up the current system. And maybe he will succeed.

For too long, too many of us have been apathetic citizens. We have watched our democratic republic crumble around us and done nothing.

We have allowed lawmakers who represent only themselves to remain in power.

I think it’s time for those of us who still feel like rising up and claiming our power as citizens. We can do it together, but first we have to listen.
