Police are looking for 2 people for the theft of a debit card

THOMASVILLE – Police are looking for two people who are allegedly stealing debit cards using a so-called “cash drop” scam.

During the scam, one of the two stands next to someone who is paying, sees the customer enter the PIN code of the debit card and calls the accomplice via telephone or Bluetooth headset. After the customer finishes paying, the second person comes over, pretends to find dropped cash and asks if it belongs to the customer. While the customer is distracted, the person steals the debit card.

Two elderly victims were targeted at the Walmart on Liberty Drive on Oct. 11 and Nov. 22, Thomasville police said.

Police are asking anyone who can identify the man or woman pictured to contact Thomasville Police at 336-475-4260 or Thomasville Crime Stoppers at 336-476-8477.

Police say people should make sure they protect their bank card details by covering their PIN when entering it and never leaving their wallet or handbag unattended.

They also recommend going back inside and informing the manager if they are approached in the parking lot, or recording the interaction if they feel uncomfortable.
