Gauteng Police releases second quarter 2024 statistics for crime in the areas

On November 25, Gauteng published the crime statistics for the second quarter (July to September 2024) of the 2024/2025 financial year.

The police stations around Randburg, Honeydew and Cosmo City were mentioned in the most categories, with statistics showing increases and decreases compared to the second quarter of 2023.

In the 17 community-reported categories of serious crimes, including: murder, rape, assault, assault causing grievous bodily harm, carjacking, etc., Honeydew was ranked 11th among the top 30 police agencies in the country, and at fourth place in the province. 1,704 cases were reported, which represents a decrease of 7 compared to 2023.

In sexual violence, Honeydew recorded ten cases, which is five counts higher than last year. They are ranked 10th in South Africa and second in the province.

In common robberies, Randburg ranked seventh in Gauteng, with 71 cases reported, compared to 72 last year, a decrease of 1.4%.

In three crimes, consisting of carjacking, theft on non-residential premises and theft on residential premises, 83 cases were reported in Cosmo City, which is an increase of 42 counts compared to 41 reported in 2023.

They also saw an 18 count increase in robberies of residential premises, placing them 24th in South Africa and seventh in Gauteng. In robberies of non-residential buildings, Cosmo City recorded 19 cases, compared to six in 2023.

Honeydew ranked third in Gauteng with a 24.7% decline in asset-related crime, compared to 2023. Asset-related crime refers to crimes where tangible property of an individual or institution is taken without consent by criminal elements, and in the absence of the owner/custodian of such property. This type of crime includes burglary of both residential and commercial buildings, theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles, theft from or from motor vehicles and stock theft.

In burglaries in non-residential buildings, Randburg saw 48 cases, compared to 22 in 2023. In Gauteng they rank fifth.

Despite the 11.5% drop, Honeydew ranked fourth nationally and third in Gauteng for motor vehicle and motorcycle theft, with 123 cases reported, compared to 139 last year. While Cosmo City saw a large increase from 70.7% with 41 reported cases in 2023, to 70 in the second quarter of 2024.

In theft from or from motor vehicles, Honeydew experienced a decrease of 36.1%, ranking eighth in the province. Honeydew recorded a 2.7% increase in the other serious crimes category, which includes all thefts not mentioned elsewhere, commercial crime and shoplifting. They were placed third in the province, recording 323 cases. They also had a 17.5% increase in commercial crime, with Douglasdale at 18% and Randburg at 16.4%.
