“We must remain open to (French President Emmanuel) Macron’s proposals. <...> It may become necessary for European soldiers to be deployed on Ukrainian territory, and Lithuania is always ready to consider such options,” he stated. during a joint press conference with his Estonian colleague Margus Tsahkna.

After a conference on Ukraine in Paris on February 26 involving delegates from about 20 Western countries, French President Emmanuel Macron said participants had considered sending ground troops to Ukraine. Although no consensus was reached, he left the door open for such a scenario in the future.

He later revisited the idea of ​​sending troops to Ukraine, saying that if Kiev asks for it, or if Russian troops break through the front lines, it cannot be ruled out. Le Monde later reported that Macron plans to form a coalition within the EU committed to sending instructors to Ukraine. On November 25, the newspaper also reported that European countries had resumed discussions on the possible deployment of troops or personnel from private military companies (PMC) in Ukraine.

Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said at the time that the deployment of foreign military contingents in Ukraine would lead to serious consequences.
