TfL is spending £1m on more parking bags for e-bikes in London and tackling dangerous parking

As environmentally friendly and useful as they are, dockless e-bikes can be a major nuisance on London’s sidewalks. We all know the picture: rental bikes left in the most awkward places, blocking strollers and wheelchairs, creating tripping hazards and generally causing problems for pedestrians. Sadiq Khan called it the ‘wild west’ and it’s safe to say that many people have had enough.

In the summer said TfL that it was researching ways to solve the e-bike problem. Now the action plan has been unveiled.

TfL is working with London’s boroughs to create more docking stations for e-bike and e-scooter rentals, has written to vehicle operators asking them to work together to tackle rogue car parks and plans to take action against operators who don’t to guarantee compliance with new policy.

E-scooters already have to be parked in designated areas, so the new policy will help bring e-bikes more into line with those rules.

Nearly £1 million will be spent on 7,500 new parking spaces in boroughs, on top of the 2,000 already in place. However, we will not feel the full impact of the policy for a while. TfL aims to install 800 of these spaces by next summer and at least 3,000 new spaces by the end of 2026.

This London council has done that it is already prohibited to leave e-bikes on sidewalks.

London gets one new e-bike operator – and 20,000 additional bicycles on the streets.
