Signed five NYS laws to protect consumers and save money

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Governor Kathy Hochul has signed a legislative package that includes five new laws aimed at protecting consumers and saving them money.

The first of the five requires health clubs to accept membership cancellation within ten business days of receiving a cancellation notice.

The legislation aims to give New Yorkers the best choices for their health without being locked into contracts, expanding their cancellation options and making the process easier.

The second prevents the imposition of fees, including administrative, administrative or administration costs, upon expiration of the term of a motor vehicle lease.

“The new law banning unnecessary lease car fees is an important step in addressing the affordability crisis facing hardworking New Yorkers. Car expenses are one of the biggest financial burdens on families, and junk costs have only made it harder to keep those costs under control. This legislation ensures transparency in leasing practices,” said Michaelle Solages, member of the General Assembly.

The third law requires telemarketers to provide certain information within the first 30 seconds of a call to disclose certain addresses in written communications with customers.

Dubbed the “Seinfeld bill,” this bill would require telemarketers to provide the name, mailing address and phone number of the person calling within the first 30 seconds of the call.

The fourth signed legislation requires restaurants offering online delivery services to post a hyperlink on their website or mobile application to view recent sanitation inspection scores on their website. The fifth and final signed legislation bans the labeling of over-the-counter medications.
